Protesters in Detroit say male circumcision should also be outlawed

A Detroit area physician faces federal charges for allegedly performing female genital mutilation on multiple 6- to 7-year-old girls as part of a religious and cultural practice at a medical clinic in Livonia. Detroit Free Press

A key distinction between male circumcision and female gender mutilation is the latter has more serious side effects.

Protesters outside of the U.S. federal courthouse in Detroit today argued to  outlaw circumcision of boys in the wake of last week's announcement of a highly publicized criminal case of female genital mutilation. The demonstrators say such mutilation doesn't just happen to girls, and that boys need protection, too.

The protest came as Dr. Jumana Nagarwala, 44, of Northville, appeared in court for a detention hearing at which she was ordered to remain locked up without bond  on charges she mutilated the genitals of two Minnesota girls. She was charged last Thursday with genital mutilation following an FBI investigation into allegations that the two girls came to metro Detroit in February with their mothers and had their genitals cut at a Livonia clinic by Nagarwala.

While the case has triggered international headlines and sparked public outrage,  the protesters said that boys also need protection from this type of procedure, as they likened circumcision to genital mutilation.
“All babies should be protected and be able to keep their whole bodies,” said Julie Colon, 26, who attended the protest with her toddler son on her back. “There’s just no reason for any child to be altered at birth or really anytime.”

Jody Farrugia, 35, a registered nurse at the Detroit Medical Center, said she has long been opposed to circumcision and tries to talk new parents out of it, but nobody seems willing to listen. “I see the risks and harms daily. I always encourage mothers to keep their sons intact but they don’t think twice. They think it’s gross, they think it’s cleaner.”

“I still hear their screams from down the hallway. It haunts me.”

Faruggia said circumcision can cause a certain number of health complications, including too much skin being taken off, which can lead to painful and tight erections as an adult. It can contribute to male erectile dysfunction and sometimes a jagged cut means repeating the surgery, she said.
She was holding a sign that said ‘Only quacks cut healthy children.’ She noted that her son has not been circumcised and he is healthy.

Another protester was Jerry Boor, 70, of Rochester Hills, who believes both science and the Bible are against circumcision.

He noted that his mother had him circumcised but he chose not to circumcise his son after researching the issue and concluding it wasn’t a medical necessity. “I love her but she didn’t know any better,” he said of his mother.

According to organizers of the protest, the genitals of 49,000 baby boys are cut in Michigan every year at the request of parents, denying a boy's right to intact and normal genitals. They say they are upset that doctors are legally allowed to cut the genitals of boys, without any medical necessity, but that a federal law prohibits cutting the genitals of girls and makes it a 5-year-felony.

"The genitals of both girls and boys needs to be protected from the harm of any genital cutting practice," says Norm Cohen, executive director of NOCIRC of Michigan, a nonprofit, consumer-rights advocacy group that researches circumcision effects. “Michigan has one of the highest rates of circumcision in the world. This unnecessary custom violates a child’s right to bodily integrity and normal functions.”

Democracy Loses in Turkey

Opinion

Editorial

The best thing that can be said about Turkey’s constitutional referendum is that many voters — 48.7 percent of those casting ballots — opposed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s most outrageous move yet to solidify his autocratic rule. Mr. Erdogan, who had expected to win 60 percent of the vote on Sunday, lost the major cities of Ankara and Istanbul. His legitimacy was further eroded by allegations of voting irregularities from international monitors.
Even so, his victory is expected to prevail in the final count, leaving Turkey in the hands of an erratic and vengeful man and the world wondering whether a nation that for decades has served as a crucial bridge between Europe and the Muslim world can possibly have a stable and prosperous future under someone with so little respect for democratic structures and values.

Trump's Mar-a-Lago kitchen slapped with 13 health violations

Story highlights

  • A state health inspector cited Trump's "Winter White House" for 13 violations in January
  • The Palm Beach resort ultimately passed inspection after it took some corrective actions
(CNN)President Trump has promised to make America great again. Maybe he should start with the kitchen at Mar-a-Lago.

The President's posh resort in Palm Beach, Florida, was slapped with 13 health violations at its last kitchen inspection in January, including three categorized as "high priority" by Florida's Division of Hotels and Restaurants
Two of those were related to keeping raw meat -- such as the beef at the heart of Trump's beloved meatloaf -- in walk-in and reach-in coolers that were set above the mandated maximum temperature of 41 degrees.
The results of the January 26 inspection -- the first and only since Trump's inauguration -- were first reported Wednesday by the Miami Herald.
State sanitation and safety laws define high-priority violations as "those which could contribute directly to a foodborne illness or injury and include items such as cooking, reheating, cooling and hand-washing."
Another violation was for serving undercooked seafood that "not undergone proper parasite destruction," the inspector's report said. The inspector ordered the fish to be "fully cooked or discarded."

Global analysis of biosynthetic gene clusters reveals vast potential of secondary metabolite production in Penicillium species

Abstract

Filamentous fungi produce a wide range of bioactive compounds with important pharmaceutical applications, such as antibiotic penicillins and cholesterol-lowering statins. However, less attention has been paid to fungal secondary metabolites compared to those from bacteria. In this study, we sequenced the genomes of 9 Penicillium species and, together with 15 published genomes, we investigated the secondary metabolism of Penicillium and identified an immense, unexploited potential for producing secondary metabolites by this genus. A total of 1,317 putative biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) were identified, and polyketide synthase and non-ribosomal peptide synthetase based BGCs were grouped into gene cluster families and mapped to known pathways. The grouping of BGCs allowed us to study the evolutionary trajectory of pathways based on 6-methylsalicylic acid (6-MSA) synthases. Finally, we cross-referenced the predicted pathways with published data on the production of secondary metabolites and experimentally validated the production of antibiotic yanuthones in Penicillia and identified a previously undescribed compound from the yanuthone pathway. This study is the first genus-wide analysis of the genomic diversity of Penicillia and highlights the potential of these species as a source of new antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals.

The man who said he could grab women by the p****y just launched a National Sexual Assault Awareness month

Donald Trump just announced April as National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.

No, this is not an April Fool's joke.

Donald Trump, the man who has been accused of sexual assault by numerous women.
The Commander in Chief who once implied sexual assault is to be "expected" when men and women serve together in the military.

He was also infamously recorded in 2005 boasting about "grabbing women by the p****y".
In a 2005 conversation with Billy Bush, of Access Hollywood, Trump bragged on camera saying “When you’re a star, they let you do it" adding he needed Tic Tacs "just in case I start kissing" a woman he's about to meet.
"You know I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it, you can do anything. Grab them by the p***y, you can do anything"
He also allegedly rated female Apprentice contestants on their looks and asked for their bra size, even writing in his 2004 book How to Get Rich
"It’s certainly not groundbreaking news that the early victories by the women on ‘The Apprentice’ were, to a very large extent, dependent on their sex appeal."
Mr Trump has vehemently denied all the allegations, saying that they are false.
In 2009, Barack Obama became the first president to officially proclaim April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month - although it had been recognised by activists for decades.
However, 2017 marks the first time a person accused of sexual assault has proclaimed it.
The proclamation reads
"At the heart of our country is the emphatic belief that every person has unique and infinite value.  We dedicate each April to raising awareness about sexual abuse and recommitting ourselves to fighting it.  Women, children, and men have inherent dignity that should never be violated."
"According to the Department of Justice, on average there are more than 300,000 instances of rape or other sexual assault that afflict our neighbors and loved ones every year.  Behind these painful statistics are real people whose lives are profoundly affected, at times shattered, and who are invariably in need of our help, commitment, and protection."
He adds:
"There is tremendous work to be done.  Together, we can and must protect our loved ones, families, campuses, and communities from the devastating and pervasive effects of sexual assault.  In the face of sexual violence, we must commit to providing meaningful support and services for victims and survivors in the United States and around the world."

Trump’s Chumps

You voted for a man who boasted of sexual assault, a man whose “university” defrauded thousands of people, a billionaire who thought the minimum wage was too high. You switched from Barack Obama in 2012 to Donald Trump in 2016 — one in four white working-class voters — because you thought he was on your side.

You don’t mind the lying. In fact, you’re all in with the biggest lies, the baseless claims that three million people voted illegally, that Obama ordered a wiretap of Trump Tower, and on, and on. The lying is disruptive. Yay for disruption!

You don’t mind the flip-flops. Last year, Trump said the unemployment rate was “one of the biggest hoaxes in American history.” This year, because he’s president, it’s very real. Last year, Wall Street was a puppeteer for the Democrats. Now your man has brought in Goldman Sachs puppeteers to run the economy. Last year, a golfing president was lazy. Now your guy has paid 14 presidential visits to a golf course.

You’re not bothered by the foreign policy incompetence, the siding up to gangster regimes and human rights violators, the snub of the rest of the world in the name of America First. You don’t mind unleashing polluters. If the job creators want filthy air and foul water, give it to them.

You shrug at all of this hypocrisy and craziness, because you still think he’s going to help you. But you’ve been played, sucker-punched, duped. You can continue to believe Trump has your back, but the evidence is already overwhelming that the people his presidency will hurt most are those at the bottom who gave him their trust.

1 in 8 Chance of Catastrophic Solar Megastorm by 2020

By Adam Mann

The Earth has a roughly 12 percent chance of experiencing an enormous megaflare erupting from the sun in the next decade. This event could potentially cause trillions of dollars’ worth of damage and take up to a decade to recover from. Such an extreme event is considered to be relatively rare. The last gigantic solar storm, known as the Carrington Event, occurred more than 150 years ago and was the most powerful such event in recorded history. That a rival to this event might have a greater than 10 percent chance of happening in the next 10 years was surprising to space physicist Pete Riley, senior scientist at Predictive Science in San Diego, California, who published the estimate in Space Weather on Feb. 23. “Even if it’s off by a factor of two, that’s a much larger number than I thought,” he said. Earth’s sun goes through an 11-year cycle of increased and decreased activity. During solar maximum, it’s dotted with many sunspots and enormous magnetic whirlwinds erupt from its surface. Occasionally, these flares burst outward from the sun, spewing a mass of charged particles out into space. Small solar flares happen quite often whereas very large ones are infrequent, a mathematical distribution known as a power law. Riley was able to estimate the chance of an enormous solar flare by looking at historical databases and calculating the relation between the size and occurrence of solar flares. The biggest solar event ever seen was the Carrington Event, which occurred on Sept. 1, 1859. That morning, astronomer Richard Carrington watched an enormous solar flare erupt from the sun’s surface, emitting a particle stream at the Earth traveling more than 4 million miles per hour.
